ABC News Anchor Elizabeth Vargas has checked back into rehab.

In a surprising move, Elizabeth Vargas has voluntarily returned to rehab.

Back in November, the 20/20 cohost revealed that she was fighting the battle of the bottle. She entered a treatment facility and then a few short months later gave a dramatic interview with “Good Morning America’s” George Stephanopoulos. She admitted on national TV to the public that she was in AA,

“I am. I am an alcoholic. It took me a long time to admit that to myself. It took me a long time to admit it to my family, but I am.”

In fact the clip was still up on Youtube.

Now just over 8 months later, Vargas has found herself slipping. The 52 year old was vacationing in California this weekend and decided that she needed help and checked herself back into a treatment facility.  Vargas released a statement herself regarding this most recent relapse,

“As so many other recovering alcoholics know, overcoming the disease can be a long and incredibly difficult process. I feel I have let myself, my co-workers and most importantly my family down, and for that I am ashamed and sorry. I am committed to battling and addressing this debilitating disease and want to thank everyone who has offered their unwavering support during this trying time.”

She has not provided any indication as to when she will return but ABC has expressed their full support. A spokesperson for ABC expressed the support of the station,

“Nothing is more important than Elizabeth’s health and well-being and we stand squarely behind her. Our thoughts are with Elizabeth and her family and we look forward to having her back at ABC News when she feels ready to return.”

In March, Vargas said she will write a book chronicling her struggle with the disease.  The book is due to be released in 2016.
