Anna Faris Says It’s Important To Have Female Friends, And That The Idea Of Your Mate Being Your Best Friend Is “Overhyped”
It looks like Anna Faris has learned some important life lessons recently. As most of you should know, Faris split from her husband Chris Pratt in August after eight years of marriage. It was shocking news, and no one knows exactly why the split happened, but most people believe it was due to Pratt’s busy, star-filled schedule.
In an adapted essay from her new book, Unqualified, the 40-year-old actress explained how important it is to have a group of girl friends.
“I was once told that I didn’t need a tight group of girlfriends because Chris should be my best friend. But I never bought that. The idea of your mate being your best friend — it’s overhyped.”
I’m not sure if she wrote this before or after the marriage troubles, but if she wrote it while going through the split, it makes a lot of sense. Obviously there are tons of couples out there who are truly “best friends” with each other, and I don’t see how that could possibly be a negative thing.
Unless, of course, you become dependent on each other. That’s where you get into trouble, ’cause then you don’t know what to do with yourself if/when the relationship ends.
Faris goes on to talk about how it’s not exactly a great thing to be considered a “guys’ girl”
“In my 20s, I thought it was cool to say I was a guys’ girl. Back then, I thought that having the approval of my stoner guy friends was of greater value than having the approval of beautiful blonde sorority girls. I was selling my own gender down the river, and I wasn’t even getting any fulfillment from the relationships with those dudes. It takes vulnerability of spirit to open yourself up to other women in a way that isn’t competitive. That’s especially hard in Hollywood, where competition is built into almost every interaction.”
I think she makes a lot of great points here, and it’s something women (and even guys) should practice. But also, don’t reject the idea of your mate being your best friend. Just make sure you can survive without your best friend one day.
