Anton Yelchin’s Family Settles Wrongful Death Lawsuit With Automaker After Fatal Jeep Accident
Back in 2016, Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin was leaving his home in Los Angeles when he got out of his Jeep Grand Cherokee, presumably to check his mail.
Tragically, the Jeep rolled down his driveway and pinned him against a security gate. According to the reports, he died almost immediately, but his body was pinned for a few hours before it was discovered.
“Authorities had said he thought the shifter was in park when it was actually in neutral. It was apparently a common mistake and the vehicles had actually been recalled for a fix at the time of the accident, but Yelchin had not yet taken the Jeep in.”
His parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Fiat Chrysler (the company who manufactures the Jeep) back in August after they learned that his vehicle had been recalled. According to the suit, Yelchin had just been notified about the recall seven days before his death.
The good news is that his parents just reached a settlement with the company. No word on how much they received, but we have to imagine it was a pretty penny.
“FCA US is pleased that we’ve reached an amicable resolution in this matter. The details of the settlement are confidential. We continue to extend our deepest sympathies to the Yelchin family for their tragic loss.”
The Yelchin family says the settlement will go to the Anton Yelchin Foundation, which focuses on supporting young people in creative arts with debilitating diseases or disabilities. It’ll also be used to fund an upcoming documentary about his life.
