Uh, Whoops? Noah Cyrus Apologizes After Using Racially Insensitive Term While Supporting Harry Styles
The world has been talking about Harry Styles and his dress for weeks now. In the year 2020, we had no idea a dude (especially a flamboyant dude like Styles) wearing a dress would spark so much heated conversation.
But it did, and several celebrities have been standing up for Styles. The latest celeb to have his back? Noah Cyrus.
The 20-year-old singer went on her Instagram and shared one of the images from Styles’ photoshoot with Vogue. She captioned the photo, “He wears this dress better than any of u nappy ass heauxz.”
Uh-oh. That’s obviously a no-no. Cyrus was instantly hit with backlash. Some users were pissed, while others simply tried to explain why that language is offensive.
Not long after, she posted an apology in her Instagram Stories:
I am mortified that i used a term without knowing the context and history, but i know now and i am horrified and truly sorry. I will never use it again. thank you for educating me. i in no way meant to offend anyone. i am so so sorry.
The word nappy is often used as an insult to hurt people of color, mostly women, whose hair is coarse in texture versus hair that is sleek and more reflective of Western beauty standards.
Cyrus isn’t the only one to get in trouble. Who could forget the infamous Don Imus?
Looks like Cyrus is a little too young to remember this moment in time.
