There were rumblings of this happening a few days ago, but now it’s official. Drake has become the first artist ever to surpass 50 billion combined streams on Spotify.
A rep for the streaming service confirmed the news. It’s a truly impressive accomplishment. I mean, 50 billion streams! 50 BILLION! That’s a huge freaking number. That’s like 100 billion ears, right? That’s how it works?
His song ‘God’s Plan’ is responsible for over 1.5 billion of the streams, and he has several other songs with millions and millions and millions of streams.
And those numbers will go up because he’s about to drop a new album, Certified Lover Boy. It’s the follow-up to his 2018 album, Scorpion. This new album is expected to drop later this month.
The Toronto-born artist has racked up many streaming feats in recent years: He was Spotify’s most-streamed artist of the 2010s, with 28 billion streams; the top 5 was rounded out by Ed Sheeran, Post Malone, Ariana Grande and Eminem.
In its first 24 hours of release in 2018, Drake’s ‘Scorpion’ shattered Spotify’s one-day global record for album streams, with the album’s individual tracks totaled 132,450,203 streams, more than 50,000,000 greater than the previous record.
Pretty incredible stuff. I think it speaks to just how catchy his tunes are. They may not be the best songs ever, and who knows, in 30 years, maybe they’re irrelevant.
But for the moment we’re in right now? He has the sound. He has the formula, and he’s riding that sh*t to the bank. Dude is worth over $150 million and that number is growing fast.
