Here Is What The Weeknd Has Said About His Upcoming Super Bowl 2021 Halftime Show
It’s hard to believe, but the 2021 Super Bowl is this weekend, February 7. The Kansas City Chiefs will be taking on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It’s Tom Brady vs Patrick Mahomes. It’s basically old vs new, which should make for a compelling storyline.
But if you don’t care about football, then you’re probably just looking forward to the halftime show. The Weeknd is set to perform during halftime, and even though the performance may look a little different because of COVID-19, the 30-year-old singer is determined to put on the best show possible.
When it was first revealed he’d be performing during halftime, The Weeknd released a statement talking about how this has been a lifelong dream…
We all grow up watching the world’s biggest acts playing the Super Bowl, and one can only dream of being in that position. I’m humbled, honored and ecstatic to be the center of that infamous stage this year.
So what can we expect to see during his performance? Well, he hopes to make it a more cinematic experience, so that fans at home can really appreciate it.
We’ve been really focusing on dialing in on the fans at home and making performances a cinematic experience, and we want to do that with the Super Bowl.
According to his manager, The Weeknd has put in around $7 million from his own pocket to “make this halftime show be what he envisioned,” which sounds like it has to be an exaggeration, right? SEVEN MILLION? I mean, he’s worth over $100 million, but still…that’s a lot of money.
He also revealed that he’s going to try his best to keep things family-friendly…
I definitely want to be respectful to the viewers at home. I will still incorporate some of the story line. It’s a very cohesive story I’ve been telling throughout this [After Hours] era and throughout this year.
And speaking of that story, he claims it’s the storyline that’s going to prevent him from having any special guests…
I’ve been reading a lot of rumors. I wouldn’t bet on it. There wasn’t any room to fit it in the narrative and the story that I was telling in the performance. So, yeah, there’s no special guests.
I don’t know about you, but I don’t believe that for one minute. THERE WILL BE A SPECIAL GUEST!
