Tiger Woods Is Alert And Recovering After Undergoing Leg Surgery Following Car Crash
Yesterday we told you the breaking news that Tiger Woods was involved in a rollover car crash in Los Angeles County early Tuesday morning.
TMZ reported that firefighters had to use the jaws of life to get him out of the smashed vehicle, but now we are learning the jaws of life were not needed. However, they did have to use an ax and other tools to pry open a door.
According to the report, Woods was traveling at high rate of speed when his vehicle made contact with a center median, which resulted in him losing control of the car.
He crossed into incoming traffic, hit a curb and a tree before rolling several times down a hill.
The five-time Masters Tournament champion was wearing his seat belt when he crashed, and Villaneuva said the airbags in Woods’ car ‘gave him the cushion to survive what otherwise would have been a fatal crash.’
And while wearing his seatbelt and the lovely invention of airbags saved his life, he still suffered some pretty severe injuries, especially to his legs.
He had open fractures (you know, where the bone is sticking out) affecting both the lower and upper portions of the tibia and fibula bones. He also had additional injuries to his ankles.
Mr. Woods suffered significant orthopaedic injuries to his right lower extremity that were treated during emergency surgery by Orthopaedic trauma specialists at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, a level 1 trauma center. Comminuted open fractures affecting both the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibula bones were stabilized by inserting a rod into the tibia.
Trauma to the muscle and soft-tissue of the leg required surgical release of the covering of the muscles to relive pressure due to swelling.
Yikes. As you can imagine, the surgery was long, but thankfully Woods is finished with the first round and is alert and on the road to recovery.
A statement was shared on the golfer’s Twitter account…
According to locals in the area, the stretch of road where Woods crashed is particularly dangerous, especially if you are speeding and unfamiliar with the area.
TMZ spoke with a number of locals who live in the Rancho Palos Verdes and Rolling Hills Estates area — where Tiger’s 2021 Genesis GV80 lost control and rolled over in a nasty wreck — and we’re being told the same thing by all … it’s a gnarly bend, that catches up with you if you’re going too fast and unfamiliar with the area.
As for the road’s layout — where cops say Tiger flipped — it’s a massive downhill grade that cuts into a tough turn. There have even been fatal accidents at the same spot.
This stretch of road is so dangerous there was a runaway ramp built-in to help vehicles that have lost control and need to slow down.
Safe to say, Woods is lucky to be alive.
