Former NFL Player Phillip Adams Shoots And Kills Five People In South Carolina, And Then Kills Himself

We have some extremely disturbing news to report today. On Wednesday (April 7) a gunman walked inside a home in South Carolina belonging to prominent doctor Robert Lesslie.

The gunman shot and killed Robert, his wife Barbara, their two grandkids and another man who was working outside the home. A sixth person was also shot and is currently in the hospital with “serious gunshot wounds.”

Obviously there was a manhunt for the suspect, but on Thursday morning, officials made another gruesome discovery.

Police discovered the body of former NFL player Phillip Adams. He apparently shot himself early Thursday morning.

According to the reports, there was a prior connection between Adams and the victims — the football player’s parents live in the area and Phillip had reportedly been previously treated by Dr. Robert Lesslie.

Adams played in over 70 NFL games over five seasons for six teams. During the 2012 season with the Raiders, he suffered two concussions over just three games, and likely many more throughout his football playing days.

Whether he suffered long-lasting concussion-related injuries wasn’t immediately clear. Adams would not have been eligible for testing as part of a broad settlement between the league and its former players over such injuries, because he hadn’t retired by 2014.

Adams’ father told a local news channel that he blamed football for his son’s troubles.

I can say he’s a good kid — he was a good kid, and I think the football messed him up. He didn’t talk much and he didn’t bother nobody.

Adams’ former agent, Scott Casterline, was shocked by the news.

He was part of my family. I loved him. He’s a great kid, a great guy. This is so unlike him. He had to not be in his right mind, obviously. All of us who knew Philip are shaking our heads. He struggled away from the game. I tried to get him to come to Texas. I was going to find him a job, but he wouldn’t leave South Carolina because he had a son. He was a good father.

Seeing Philip shoot two kids, it’s not him. I can’t fathom it. It’s devastating for the victims and the families.

A truly sad story. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved. So many families have been impacted by this senseless tragedy.

The NFL needs to do even more to protect their players. Football ain’t worth this.
