Elderly Couple In Assisted Living Facility Make Great Escape Using Morse Code
We tend to think of elderly people as less-than. We talk to them as if they are children and often just stick them in some retirement/nursing home to live off the rest of their days.
But what people fail to realize is that these “old” people are still young at heart. I mean, think about yourself. Let’s say you’re 40 right now, do you feel 40? Or do you still feel like you’re in your 20s?
It’s the same thing with people in their 70s and 80s. Just take a look at this crazy story from Tennessee.
A husband and wife team who reportedly suffer from either dementia or Alzheimer’s, were able to escape out of their assisted living facility recently by using morse code.
The husband was able to remember morse code from his military days.
According to the Tennessean, the guy would listen in on staffers as they punched in the security key for the front doors … and he managed to figure out the exact combo using his trained Morse code ear. It appears they hatched a plan together and walked out on a Tuesday … having gone undetected and unaccounted for about 30 minutes or so.
Not long after they made their great escape, someone found them walking down the street and returned them to the facility.
The state fined the home (a couple thousand bucks) for not changing their security codes enough.
They also promised to take the husband and wife on more walks.
I don’t know, man. I feel like if he was smart enough to crack the code, they should have let him roam free a bit longer. Like, still watch him, but let him think he’s on his own for a little while. I wonder what they would have done.
