The Jersey Shore’s Sixth Season, Premiering October 4th Will be Its Last!
It had a good run while it lasted. Thursday October 4th will start the last season of the Jersey Shore. Believe it or not, the show started in 2009, which seems like decades ago, and produced six of the most unlikely millionaires: Ronnie, Pauly D, Snooki, the Situation, J-Woww, and Sammi.
The show’s success could be attributed to Dominoes refusing to run commercials on MTV during the show or to Snooki’ getting punched in the face. The two incidents catapulted the show into the nightly news, and The Jersey Shore became “Must See TV”, smashing ratings even against major broadcast network shows in the 18-49 demographic.
The show began to lose ratings when the cast went to Italy, where I felt it jumped the shark, and then last year when they returned to Seaside, they did so without part of their audience.
WHY MTV DECIDED SIX WAS ENOUGH
MTV’s decision to stop the show at six was not purely a ratings decision. Last season’s return to Seaside premiered to 7.6 million households, a huge number for MTV, but due to the millions that the cast was now making per their latest contracts, the overall profitability of the show was slipping. Although MTV was still making money, it wasn’t nearly as much as it’s been in Season’s 1 thru 4.
Snooki getting pregnant also threw a monkey wrench in things. Having a “mom to be” clashed big time with the party lifestyle. A pregnant Snooki is the definition of a buzz kill.
Just because the original show is getting cancelled does not mean that MTV is finished with the Jersey Crew. Snooki & JWOWW has been picked up for a season 2 and nothing has been confirmed yet about Pauly’s spinoff, The Pauly D Project but if things go as planned, he should be getting a second season as well. MTV has also expressed interest in a possible Snooki-Jionni spinoff or even doing a Snooki wedding show.
Chris Linn, MTV’s reality executive said that he would love to have a Snooki-Jionni Wedding special. He says,
“That could be Amazing”
I’m certainly Jersey Shore’d out. I could possibly even do without season six, but since it’s already filmed and wrapped, bring it on. (Yes….I’m fist pumping as I type).
