The Onion Uses the “C” word to describe Quvenzhane Wallis. Then Apologizes.

The website “The Onion” went where no website has gone before.  They called 9 year old Oscar Nominee Quvenshane Wallis the “C” word.  No, not Cute!  The other C-word.

Although the tweet was removed almost instantly after It was broadcast during the Oscars, it was there long enough for bloggers like myself to get a nice clear screen shot.

One might actually agree that young Wallis has a little bit of an attitude problem however even longtime fans of “The Onion” could not support calling a young girl such an offensive term.

Like any website, traffic is The Onions bread and butter.   That’s how the bills are paid.  When people begin pledging to stop subscribing to the Onion’s Twitter feed, an apology was issued with the quickness.  Steve Hannna the CEO of “The Onion” did the honors personally.  Here is the apology in its entirety:

Dear Readers,

On behalf of The Onion, I offer my personal apology to Quvenzhané Wallis and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the tweet that was circulated last night during the Oscars. It was crude and offensive — not to mention inconsistent with The Onion’s commitment to parody and satire, however biting.

No person should be subjected to such a senseless, humorless comment masquerading as satire.

The tweet was taken down within an hour of publication. We have instituted new and tighter Twitter procedures to ensure that this kind of mistake does not occur again.

In addition, we are taking immediate steps to discipline those individuals responsible.

Miss Wallis, you are young and talented and deserve better. All of us at The Onion are deeply sorry.

Sincerely,

Steve Hannah
CEO
The Onion

I’m sure that wasn’t the first time that Wallis was called a bad name, and if she keeps up that attitude it won’t be the last.  The difference is in the future, they won’t all come with apologies.
