Steven King Talks Smack About Popular Fiction
Legendary novelist Stephen King caused a bit of controversy while chatting with The Guardian on a promotional tour for his new novel, Doctor Sleep, the upcoming sequel to The Shining. He was asked about several of the contemporary best selling novels available and the King of horror did not hold anything back.
He started off by pointing out the similarities between his novel The Running Man, compared to Susan Collins tween angst-filled Hunger Games series. Specifically, he stated “It’s not unlike The Running Man, which is about a game where people are actually killed and people are watching: a satire on reality TV.”
He didn’t hold anything back when talking Twilight either, when he caused a collective “OMG!” heard around the world after announcing what he thought of the Twilight series. Specifically, he coined the new phrase ‘tweenager porn”.
Finally, he admitted to reading Fifty Shades of Grey and pointed out, “they call it mommy porn, but it’s not really mommy porn. It is highly charged, sexually driven fiction for women who are, say, between 18 and 25.” When asked what he thought of the series, King stated he had no desire to read on after the first book.
With all this smack talking, the 66 year old author proved he can be just as bad as any mean girl. His new novel is due out this Tuesday.
