Simone Biles Set To Make Olympics Return In Balance Beam Final
Everyone has been waiting to see if Simone Biles would get over her mental block in time to compete in at least one event at the Tokyo Olympics, and it looks like she will!
USA Gymnastics confirmed this week that the 24-year-old gymnast will be competing in Tuesday’s balance beam final at the Olympic Games.
We are so excited to confirm that you will see two U.S. athletes in the balance beam final tomorrow — Suni Lee AND Simone Biles!! Can’t wait to watch you both!
This is the last event, so it’s unclear if she’s truly over her mental issues, or if she simply feels pressured to compete in at least one event.
Biles, 24, won bronze on beam in Rio in 2016 and is the three-time world champion on the event. She has been in attendance at the Ariake Gymnastics Centre to cheer on her teammates at every competition since — including Monday during the floor final, which started moments after the news broke.
This is a good sign, as some people wondered if she would ever compete again. She said last week that she was “petrified” of what she was experiencing while trying to do stunts.
She said her problems were called the “twisties” — a mental block that prevented her from finding her bearings while spinning in the air.
“Literally can not tell up from down. It’s the craziest feeling ever. Not having an inch of control over your body,” she revealed.
And that’s the thing we’ve been saying. A mental block for her ain’t the same as one for you. She could break a leg, an arm, or hell even a neck. She performs the most complicated stunts in the game.
Hopefully everything goes well for her on the beam on Tuesday. It’ll be a great comeback if she can at least medal.
