Selena Gomez Opens Up About Her Mental Health, Says She Was Hearing Voices Before Entering Treatment
If you’ve been following the celebrity gossip world long enough, then you know Selena Gomez has not only battled with physical health issues (Lupus diagnosis) she has also been dealing with mental health issues as well.
She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder back in 2018 after suffering a psychosis episode. And while she has been open about her mental health struggles, she’s just now revealing the details of how bad it was.
In a new cover story for Rolling Stone, the 30-year-old singer/actress talked about how she ended up in a treatment center after hearing voices and becoming paranoid. She was “unrecognizable” to her friends at the time and spent several months in treatment.
But even after treatment, her struggles continued because she was taking so much medication.
It was just that I was gone. There was no part of me that was there anymore. I had to detox, essentially, from the medications I was on. I had to learn how to remember certain words. I would forget where I was when we were talking. It took a lot of hard work for me to (a) accept that I was bipolar, but (b) learn how to deal with it because it wasn’t going to go away.
These days, she’s only on two medications and feeling much like her old self. It’s funny how similar this is to Kanye’s journey. He was also diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and it’s very obvious he suffers from similar thoughts of paranoia. And he’s also complained about how medications make him feel like some lesser version of himself.
The only difference is that instead of working with a team of doctors and therapists to find a solution that works, Kanye just abandoned everything and decided everyone else was the problem.
In any event, if you want to learn more about Selena’s journey, you can catch her upcoming documentary, My Mind & Me, which is set to be released on Apple + TV on November 4.
It’s very vulnerable. To be honest, it can be a little uncomfortable even watching some of it. I definitely want to go into hiding after this comes out.
