Typically, when an old Ellen DeGeneres video goes viral, it’s that awkward clip of Ellen claiming she wasn’t invited to Dakota Johnson’s birthday party. If you haven’t watched it, you should go check it out.
But now a new clip is going viral on TikTok featuring Taylor Swift and Ellen. The clip is from 2012, and it features Ellen going through guys Swift may have dated. Ellen handed Swift a bell and asked her to ring it every time a photo came up of someone she dated.
Swift was visibly uncomfortable with the whole thing and said several times she didn’t want to do it. And to her credit, she never rang that bell once. Ellen had to grab the bell and start ringing it in a desperate attempt to save the segment.
The viral TikTok video also features a clip from an interview Swift had years later on Apple Beats’ Zane Lowe. In the clip, she talks about interviewers reducing her to the men she had dated in the early days of her career.
When I was like 23, people were just kind of reducing me to — kind of making slideshows of my dating life and putting people in there that I’d sat next to at a party once and deciding that my songwriting was like a trick rather than a skill and a craft. It’s a way to take a woman who is doing her job and succeeding at doing her job and making things, and it’s, in a way, it’s figuring out how to completely minimize that skill.
A lot of people agreed with Swift in the comments, including Emily Ratajkowski. She commented and wrote, “This is so f–ked up. She’s literally begging her to stop.”
Another user wrote, “She’s clearly visibly upset, but having to, like, ‘perform’ that she’s laughing it off because an audience of people is laughing at her.”
Ellen nor her reps have commented on the recent viral video, and you shouldn’t expect them to either. After all, it happened over 10 years ago.
