‘SNL’ Star Bowen Yang Taking Break From Podcast To Focus On Mental Health After Bouts Of “Depersonalization”
It looks like Bowen Yang needs a break in the worst way. The ‘SNL‘ star is stepping away from his ‘Las Culturistas’ podcast, which he co-hosts with Matt Rogers.
They have been recording the podcast since 2016 and the two regularly interview A-list celebrities. It’s a pretty popular podcast, but fans will have to wait a little bit for a new episode.
Yang went on his Instagram Story over the weekend to tell his fans he has been suffering from “bad bouts of depersonalization” and needed to take a break to protect his mental health.
Taking a very short break from [‘Las Culturistas’]. Bad bouts of depersonalization are f–king me up bad, but I am doing my best to get better! Please take care, be soon.
For those who don’t know, depersonalization is a psychological condition in which people have out-of-body experiences that cause them to believe that things around them aren’t real. Basically, they lose their sense of reality, which obviously can be a very scary thing.
The condition is more common in people who have suffered trauma, which Yang has. He has previously revealed that his trauma comes from his parents sending him to a gay conversion camp.
There was a huge chasm of misunderstanding. Neither side really understood where the other was coming from, and it led to very dangerous situations overall. What was always constant was the intention of love from both sides. It pushed me into questioning what it meant, what was protected and what I should be protective about in terms of being a queer person. I don’t take it for granted.
Hopefully this break gives his brain the reset it needs.
