Former ‘One Direction’ Star Zayn Malik Sparks Controversy With Cornrows
Cultural appropriation? That’s what some people are saying on Twitter after Zayn Malik debuted a new hairstyle on his Instagram this past week.
The 30-year-old singer shared a photo of himself in a studio alongside music producer Daniel Zaidenstadt. And in the photo, Malik showed off some cornrows.
Of course, it’s a traditionally black hairstyle, and last time we checked, Malik is not black. This has some people on Twitter a little pissed off, but then again, when is Twitter not pissed off?
Now I KNOWWWW that ain’t Zayn w some cornrows 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭🫢🫢🫢🫢🫢 pic.twitter.com/4NPU9raLIP

According to Google, cultural appropriation is when members of a majority group adopt cultural elements of a minority group in an exploitative, disrespectful or stereotypical way.
We don’t think Malik is being disrespectful, as he probably does really like the hairstyle. I suppose you could say it’s exploitative? Or stereotypical? Or heck, maybe it is disrespectful because it looks so bad.
Wonder how Selena Gomez feels about the new look? As some of you may know, rumors are swirling that Gomez and Malik are dating. It would certainly continue the trend of Gomez entering relationships with “bad boys”.
Justin Bieber, The Weeknd, and now Malik? That’s a questionable lineup.
