What is ABC’s new show GCB all about and why did Kraft Pull their Sponsorship?

Did you see the ad for ABC’s new show GCB?  Did you actually watch the show?

Well in case you didn’t know the show is based on a book called, “Good Christian Bitches”.  It’s like Dallas meets Desperate housewives; bible toting, catty, wealthy Dallas women.

After the premier episode ABC had another controversy on their hands.  Dan Gainor of the culture and Media institute was not shy, and was one of the first critics to go on record.

“Trying to find one bad point to discuss in the foul and hateful ‘GCB’ is like trying to find one individual liberal in Hollywood. You can’t. There are too many,”

I guess the title alone leaves a lot to be desired. ABC which is owned by the Disney Television Group which also owns: ABC family, Disney Junior, and Disney has really taken a walk on the wild side with this one.  It’s the second time in six months.  “Work It”, which only lasted two episodes was another media nightmare for the television station sparking outrage and facebook fanpages against the show.

Kraft after receiving several complaints from consumers decided to pull their ads for Philadelphia Cream Cheese from their originally negotiated ad spot.  They released a statement,

“We have received a few complaints from consumers and their opinions about our advertising are important to us. We have recently decided to redirect our advertising to other programs.”

RATINGS

The ratings weren’t that bad.  An average of 7.6 million viewers tuned in putting the show in 2nd place behind CSI: Miami.  That means it beat Celebrity Apprentice which has been doing well for NBC.  It also out performed “Pan Am” which I think is a snoozer.  A period drama is not the right place for Sunday night.  Nielson also reported that once people were watching the first 30 minutes, they didn’t drop off the 2nd half of the hour which is a huge plus.

Although shows typically get their best ratings during their premier, GCB might be an exception because all the controversy is creating free PR.  Due to the retention levels, everyone who started watching, finished could mean that the show is actually good.

With Desperate Housewives coming to an end this season, GCB is just the thing to fill that gap. Hot women acting like they are the girls next door.
