NBC Apologizes for Airing Gymnast Monkey After Gabby Douglas Segment
Really? I admit we can be overly sensitive about things like this and this could easily be a coincidence but why even do it. Why??
Bob Costas, (who has been looking like a post stroke Dick Clark), just finished a segment on Gabby Douglas and talking about the fact that she is the first African American Woman to win the overall title.
He ends the segment with the words,
“There are some young African American girls out there who tonight, are saying to themselves, ‘Hey, I would like to try that too’.
Nice! Then they go to commercial and the camera fades out to a monkey on the rings in a gymnastic leotards.
REALLY?? WHO’S THE GENIUS OVER THERE AT NBC??
Tod Robberson from The Dallas Morning News said that airing the commercial was,
“supremely thoughtless and undoubtedly insulting to lots of viewers.”
After the commercial came on twitter blew up with complaints.
NBC issued a statement apologizing,
“Gabby Douglas’ gold medal performance last night was an historic and inspiring achievement. This spot promoting Animal Practice, which has run three times previously, is one in a series with an Olympic theme which have been scheduled for maximum exposure. Certainly no offense was intended.”
There are three different Olympic themed commercials for their new show “Animal Practice”, with gymnastics and swimming themes. I just think better judgment on when the commercial was shown should have been used. Not to mention Animal Practice won’t make it past half a season.
What do you think?
