Jim Carrey Continues His Fight Against Guns
You may remember a story we posted a few days ago about the guy on eBay who was selling an autographed picture of Jim Carrey to raise money for a new gun. The story was mildly interesting because Jim Carrey is a huge supporter of gun control and has been using his Twitter to express his opinions, which is kind of what Twitter is all about. Anyway, Jim Carrey has been in fighting mode for several weeks now against the pro-gun crowd. Both sides have been saying some pretty nasty things about each other, but Jim Carrey thinks it has gone too far now. The 51-year-old actor wrote in a blog post on the Huffingtonpost website,
“I have been aghast at the level of hatred heaped upon me, my family and the people I work with over a mere difference of opinion on this issue. Perhaps my words were a bit harsh at the onset, but calling someone a “Motherfucker” is far different than wishing them to die. It is shocking to see this concerted effort to brutally intimidate anyone who speaks of a compassionate compromise.”
While Jim Carrey admits that some of his words were “a bit harsh” at first, he doesn’t really give you the entire story. He claims that wishing for someone to die is a line that shouldn’t be cross, but did he already cross it himself? Jim Carrey wrote the following message on his Twitter account back on Feb. 2,
“(Anyone) who would run out to buy an assault rifle after the Newtown massacre has very little left in their body or soul worth protecting.”
I don’t know about you, but that kind of sounds like a fancy way to say that the world would be better off if those people weren’t in it. It seems to me that Jim Carrey is being a bit one sided in his blog post. He had to know he would piss a lot of people off with tweets like that. I understand his emotions were probably high at the time, though. He probably would take back that comment if he could, however, it’s too late and now he just needs to suck it up and wait for some other celebrity to piss off the right side.
Carrey ends his blog post with a plea to every American who wants to make a change. Carrey writes,
“So don’t just sit there and do nothing. Contact your representatives and let them know that their jobs depend upon change. It won’t always be someone else’s kids in the line of fire. The time is now. LET YOUR HEART BE HEARD”
He goes on to list the names of senators from each state.
It’s nice that Jim Carrey is fighting for something he believes in, but I kind of miss the guy from Dumb and Dumber who taught us all what the most annoying sound in the world was.
