Matthew Perry’s Drunken Encounter with M. Night Shyamalan?
Matthew Perry was on Jay Leno’s Tonight Show Monday night and he talked about his hilarious encounter with a guy who he thought was the Sixth Sense director, M. Night Shyamalan. The incident happened way back in 1999 when Perry was suffering with a substance abuse problem, and right after Sixth Sense had become a huge hit.
Perry was having the night of his life, talking and drinking the night away with the great Shyamalan. However, it turns out that the guy he was talking with was not Shyamalan. Perry told Leno,
“A friend of mine comes up and says, ‘How you doin’?’ I said, ‘How’m I doing? I’ve been hanging out with M. Night Shyamalan for the last three hours. This is the greatest night of my life. He’s gonna do a new movie, it’s gonna be a trick ending, it’s gonna be me.”
However, his night quickly took a hilarious turn when his friend filled him on the details. Apparently, Perry had been talking to the maitre d’ of Mr. Chow’s restaurant. He claims that he was so drunk that he really had no idea that the man he was talking to wasn’t the famous director.
Well, that’s embarrassing! There he was thinking he was talking with a Hollywood director, probably thinking that the conversation was going to land him a few roles. It’s a good thing he went and got help for his drinking problem; can you imagine what might have happened to him? He might have hitched a ride with a lonely truck driver one night and we would have never heard from him again. There would be no more Chandler Bing in the world anymore, which would be terribly sad. The world could always use a little more bing.
