Talk Show Hosts Show their Serious Side On The Boston Bombings
Clearly, this website is not a “news” website. We don’t talk about important stuff happening around the world. We talk about stupid celebrity drama to take our minds off of all the bad sh-t going on in the world. However, sometimes really terrible things happen and we just can’t help but to talk about them. A horrible event took place in Boston yesterday. At least two bombs went off during the Boston Marathon killing at least three people and injuring over 100. There isn’t much we can say that you all haven’t heard already, but our thoughts are with everyone who was affected by this senseless act of violence.
The tragedy was on the minds of everyone yesterday; even late-night comedians let down their shield of humor and talked about the events that took place. Conan O’Brien said late last night,
“First, I did wanna start by mentioning what an upsetting and sad day it has been. Boston is my hometown, it’s where I grew up, and it’s where my family lives. So I just wanted to take a moment to say that, like everyone here, my thoughts and prayers are with the people of Boston and everybody who’s been affected by this absolutely senseless act. That said, it is our job to do a show. And we’re gonna try and entertain you the very best we can. Which, given our track record, gives you people a 20 percent chance of having a good show tonight, and I think that’s pretty good.”
Late night host Craig Ferguson also talked about the events that happened yesterday. Ferguson is no stranger to emotional openings to his show. He’s one of the few late night hosts who isn’t afraid of going off script, in fact almost all of his monologues are not scripted. You may remember the touching eulogy he gave his father after his death back in 2006. So, it wasn’t a surprise to hear Craig talk about the Boston tragedy with such raw emotion. Ferguson said on his show last night,
“Obviously the news of today is so horrendous that it would seem insensitive at best to say, ‘It’s a great day for America,’ so I won’t be starting the show with that tonight. Is anyone else sick of this sh-t? I seem to say that too often. I have to not say it’s a great day for America for some random act of madness or terrorism. This is on my mind, I can’t pretend it’s not there. I’m not one of those people, I’m not a valuable quality entertainer.”
Jimmy Kimmel also talked about the bombings. He called the whole thing “disgusting” and stated that he just doesn’t understand it. He then noted that his job was to make people laugh and that he would try to do so.
Here is to hoping that today goes a little better…
