Sofia Vergara Talks About Battle with Cancer

The hottest MILF on television may seem like she has it all, but she has quietly been battling cancer for a long time now. It’s not well known, but the Modern Family Actress found out she had cancer when she was just 28-years-old. She had to have surgery to remove her thyroid, which led to her being diagnosed with hypothyroidism, which she struggles with to this day. She has to take medicine everyday to control her hormone levels, and she is now signed on to be the spokeswoman for a campaign called, “Follow the Script.” It hopes to educate people with hypothyroidism and teach them how critical it is to be consistent with treatment.

The launch of the exciting campaign was held yesterday in New York City and the HuffPost talked to Sofia about her thyroid struggles.  The actress told the reporter,

“They removed my thyroid and since then I have to use medication. I got rid of the cancer and then for me it was, ‘Oh shoot, now I have to live with this condition my whole life…I have to be on medication my whole life and I don’t have a thyroid.’ So, of course I had to make myself realize what was going on with my body and I have to say in the past ten years, I never had a problem. I’m very very straight with the way I try to do what the doctor says and I go to my doctor religiously and get my blood tests.”

Sofia talked about in detail about a lot of other things regarding her diagnosis. She discussed how she makes sure to always take her medication at the same time every morning. She said that she has to wait 30 minutes after taking it to eat, so sometimes she’ll be counting down the seconds ’til she can eat breakfast. The 40-year-old also admits that she went a little diet crazy after finding out she had cancer.  She explained,

“At the beginning when I had the cancer, I thought, ’I’m going to eat everything organic, everything healthy,’ because you’re thinking, ’What caused this cancer?’ You know, I didn’t smoke, I didn’t do many things that were unhealthy, so I did become a little crazy, but after three months I realized this is so exhausting! It was insane, like having shots of spinach, I mean crazy! So I tried to do healthy things, but not (get) crazy.”

Well, that is certainly news to me! I feel like I should have known about this, you know? Since I write about celebrities and all. However, usually when I see a story about Sofia, I just click on the link to stare at pictures of her. Maybe I should actually start reading the stories, she sounds like a great gal!
