Black Realtor And His Client Surrounded By Police With Guns Drawn, All Because Of “Concerned” Neighbor
A Black realtor in Wyoming, Michigan, and his clients were treated like criminals during a routine house showing last week.
Eric Brown was giving a tour of a house to Roy Thorne and his 15-year-old son when a bunch of cops pulled up to the house with their guns drawn.
Several police officers yelled at them, demanding that they step outside with their hands up.
All three of them did what the cops asked, and they were all cuffed and briefly detained — this while the cops asked them questions. Apparently, a concerned neighbor called in to report a break-in … as it seems there was one that had happened the week prior, with the suspect’s car at the time having a similar look to the one Eric was driving on this day.
Of course, you have to wonder if the neighbor would have called the cops if the realtor was white. The good news is that the police recognized they were in the wrong and no one was injured, but we’ve seen innocent people shot by police for a lot less.
Brown says he feels this was clear racial profiling. He doesn’t understand why the police came in so hot.
The police, for their part, say no race elements played a role in how their officers dealt with things that day. The department says when multiple people are reported inside for a possible home invasion — this is exactly how they’re trained to approach the sitch.
If the house is up for sale though, didn’t the neighbors know it was empty? Why were they treating it like a home invasion?
I feel like the cops must be super bored in Wyoming, Michigan.
Brown says he’s felt so many emotions since the incident…
I went from being afraid for my life to shellshocked to this is not right to now slightly angry. I felt definitely guilty of breaking into this house. And I had the keys to it.
Brown and Thorne are speaking to a lawyer and seeking out professional help for the emotional stress.
