Don Lemon Claims CNN Fired Him For Refusing To Put “Liars” And “Bigots” On-Air
As most of you know, longtime CNN anchor Don Lemon was fired by the former head of the network, Chris Licht. The move shocked some, while others saw it coming after Lemon had made a few blunders on-air, including saying women over the age of 40 were past their time.
Now, some two months after he was fired, the 57-year-old journalist is speaking out for the first time. He talked to ABC24 Memphis in his first sit-down interview since his firing.
I have a responsibility as an American — not only as a journalist — to tell the truth and abide by the promises of the Constitution. We need to stand up for what is right to fulfill the promise of the Constitution. We have to stand up for the truth. I don’t believe in platforming liars and bigots, insurrectionists and election deniers and putting them on the same footing as people who are telling the truth; people who are fighting for what’s right, people who are abiding by the Constitution.
And while I mostly agree with what he’s saying here, one has to ask the question,”Who determines if someone is a bigot or a liar?”
Should we allow Lemon to make that decision for us? Should we allow any network to make that decision for us? I personally don’t know the answer. Because last election, when Trump was spreading obvious lies about the election, it was damaging to allow people to spread those lies. We saw what happened when those lies were spread.
But are we a country of censorship? I think the bigger problem with news these days is that 90% of it is delivered via opinion. Not many networks report just straight news/facts anymore, and that’s probably because it’s not good for ratings. It’s too boring for most people.
So instead, we have people like Don Lemon, Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity, and Anderson Cooper delivering their own narrative.
