Matthew McConaughey Reveals He Thought He Was Going To Die During Turbulent Flight

If you’ve been on enough planes, chances are, you’ve experienced a little bit of turbulence before, but you probably haven’t experienced something quite like this.

During a recent appearance on Kelly Ripa’sLet’s Talk Off Camera‘ podcast, Matthew McConaughey talked about a terrifying flight he had recently. He was flying with his wife, Camila Aves, when the aircraft they were on dropped 4,000 feet in a matter of seconds.

I mean, it’s zero gravity. Your red wine and the glass and the plates that your food was on are all suspended floating still just in the air. And to look at it for that long—which wasn’t that long, one, two, three, four—and then everything just comes crashing down, yeah, it was a hell of a scare. A complete loss of control, 100 percent feeling of I am not in control. I have no way to get control of this situation in the moment.

The flight they were on was a March 1 Lufthansa flight. They were flying from Austin, TX, to Germany, but because of the extreme turbulence, the plane had to make an emergency landing at the Washington Dulles International Airport.

Seven people had to be transported to the hospital for minor injuries, and McConaughey could have easily been one of them because he wasn’t wearing his seatbelt when it happened.

My tray table is what held me down. I did not have my seat belt on, and there was not a seatbelt warning right before it happened. Yeah, I just immediately reached over, made sure Camila had her seat belt on, held hands there just saying, ‘OK, is that it? Is another one coming?’ Another one did come.

He also noted how different everyone’s reactions were. Some people laughed in shock, some were silent and some screamed. We’re assuming his reaction was a calm, “Well, alright, alright, alright.”

Back in March, Camila also talked about the scary flight in an Instagram post. She shared footage from the aircraft following the incident:
