Jillian Michaels Hopeful that She Has Found a Girl to Adopt From Haiti

When she quit “The Biggest Loser” we all knew it was because she wanted to be a mom.  I thought she was going to go the route of the turkey baster, but instead she chose to adopt. She even took some heat about the decision base on some comments she said regarding pregnancy and her body:

“I’m going to adopt. I can’t handle doing that to my body, Also, when you rescue something, it’s like rescuing a part of yourself,”

Personally I think at 5’2″ she would be an even greater role model if she could give birth and show everyone how easy she could get back to her weight of 110 lbs.  That won’t be happening at least no time soon.

She revealed today that she has been matched with a little girl.

“I’ve been matched with a little girl, But, I now have to get her home… It could take up to a year to get her home.”

“I went over to visit orphanages and I ended up falling in love with this little girl, and by the grace of God, I got matched up with her, So now, it’s just a matter of trying to get her home and anything can happen and fall through or fall apart, so it’s kind of premature for me to say it, but that’s where it’s at.

“So if it falls apart, you’ll know why I’m like, devastated and not coming out of my house for months,”

That’s good news, and I hope for the best for her and her “hope to be” adopted daughter, but that leaves me with a huge question that I’m sure is on everyone’s mind,

WHY DO CELEBRITIES ADOPT OVERSEAS CHILDREN INSTEAD OF ADOPTING FROM THE US?

This is a question that really bugs me.  Let’s start with some misconceptions:

1. There’s not enough US Orphans

This is not true, according to The Dave Thomas Foundation there are 129,000 US children in need of adoption.

2.  Maybe It’s Cheater To Adopt Overseas

Not true:

  • CHINA COST: $20,000 – $25,000
  • GUATEMALIAN COST: $25,000 – $30,000
  • RUSSIAN: $30,000 – $40,000
  • UNITED STATES COST: $15,000 – $25,000

3. Maybe It’s Faster

This is true, but now with international policies, this is getting to be a little more difficult.  International is 10 – 12 months and domestic is 1 to 28 months.

THE REAL REASON….

Experts believe the real reason is that celebrities feel that the baby’s parents are less likely to come after them if they are in a different country.  If a top notch adoption agency is used, then this is not the case but there is no way to be certain.  If a child is from a 3rd world country, is taken to the United States for adoption, the probability of a parent, having the resources to search for their child in another country is probably Millions to 1.  Secondly, if the child is found, the chances of this person traveling to the US and forming some type of legal team to get visitation rights etc. are even more scarce.

If that’s the case, I can definitely see understand that rationale.  People will do anything for a buck.

As you were celebrities…you now have my blessing to continue to adopt overseas.
