Borat Spoof Anthem Played at Gold Medal Ceremony for Kazakhstan Athlete Maria Dmitrienko [video]

Mariya won the gold medal at the 10^th Arab Shooting Championship in Kuwait.  During any worldwide Gold Medal ceremony it is customary to play the gold medal winners country’s national anthem; in this instance the song to be played is called “My Kazakhstan”.

That’s not what played at all.  Instead the anthem from the Borat movie blared from the speaker system.  Not only is playing the wrong anthem ridiculously disrespectful, but to play the theme song from a movie that was created to mocked your country is even worse.  Some of the lyrics of the song include,

“Kazakhstan’s prostitutes cleanest in the region, except of course Turkmenistan’s.”

Mariya stood firm and unshaken by the incident but it had to be crazy embarrassing.

What most people forget is that the full name of the Borat movie is actually, “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan,”  Many Kazakhs were pissed because the movie portrays them as bumbling idiots.

The foreign ministry told reporters that they will be investigating the incident as a scandal,

“It is, of course, a scandal and demands a thorough investigation, which we intend to conduct,”

Another member of the shooting team, Oksana Stavistskaya said that the president of the Asia Shoot Federation apologized personally,

[He] personally apologized to us. He recognized that the use of the music from the scandalous film in place of the anthem of Kazakhstan was completely a mistake of the organizers. He explained that the awards ceremony was conducted by a firm under contract,”
