Oprah did a morning pop over to her best friends show, “CBS This Morning” and was interviewed by Charlie Rose and Gayle King. We have chronicled Oprah’s journey in launching her OWN network and at this point the entire world is aware of the struggles. She starts off by clearing up any rumors that she was not happy for her friend by expressing her full support of Gayle. Then they jump right into OWN and its troubles.
Oprah is very candid as Charlie Rose hits her with a pretty direct line of questioning, at which point she reveals that things are a lot tougher then she originally thought.
“The idea of creating a network was something that I wanted to do. Had I known that it was this difficult, I might have done something else.
I didn’t think it was going to be easy, but…if I knew then what I know now, I might have made different choices. If I were writing a book about it, I could call the book ‘101 Mistakes”
Oprah then described that one of the big mistakes was that she was not actually ready. She was sill wrapping up her daily show and was getting enormous pressures to launch OWN, and had some definite initial concerns.
“It’s like, having the wedding when you know you’re not ready. And you’re walking down the aisle and you’re saying, ‘Oh, I don’t know if we should be walking down the aisle. Maybe we should have postponed this’, I would have probably waited until I actually finished ‘The Oprah Show’”
CHARLIE CALLS HER OUT
When Oprah makes her dramatic voice and tells Charlie and Gayle the hardest thing she had to do was lay off 30 people, Charlie Rose asks,
“What did you actually say to them”.
D’oh!! B-U-S-T-E-D. You and I (and Charlie) both know that Oprah didn’t actually lay these people off, but that’s how she made it sound. Charlie called her out. Oprah was forced to responds with the actual, factual,
“I didn’t actually do it. We had a team of personnel people to do it, because we wanted it all to happen at the same time”.
Yeah, that’s more like it. “O” was chillin in one of her mansions, and they brought in the wrecking crew to do the dirty work. I’m sure she felt bad, but there is a big difference from firing people in person and having them fired.
FREUDIAN SLIP?
Oprah says
“Because you failed at something, which we haven’t failed, but just because you fail doesn’t make you a failure. When you know that in the core of yourself, you can keep trying or you can use whatever is happening in that moment to say, ‘Maybe I need to move in a new direction.”
That’s interesting because she said because you “failed”. It’s almost like she is admitting that she failed. Taking her own advice, she needs to stop using negative terms because then you put it out in the universe. That’s right…I gets’ my Oprah on!
OPRAH JABS BACK…SLIGHTLY.
She basically closes out her segment by reiterating that starting a network takes time. It doesn’t happen overnight. Then she uses “CBS This Morning” as an example.
Everything takes it’s time, even this particular show. There has been a lot of people in shis show, I think they have finally got it right.
