Vanessa Williams releases shocking details this week including that she was actually molested as a child… a woman.  She has written a book with her mother entitled “You Have No Idea”.

She’s right.  I didn’t!

Vanessa Williams recounts the gory details to People magazine.  She explains how she was molested by the daughter of a family friend during a visit.

Family friends who had a daughter invited me to visit their friends in California with them. The family we stayed in had two kids.’

‘Susan, who was 18, smoked, drove a car and was the epitome of cool. [My friend] Nancy and I slept in the den. One night Susan crept in.’

‘She told me to lie down on the rug. I was confused. Are we going to play a game? As I tried to make sense of it, Susan pulled down the bloomers of my cotton baby-doll pajamas. “What are you doing?” I asked. “Don’t worry – it’ll feel good”’

‘I lay there paralyzed. What was going on? I didn’t speak. She kept at [the molestation] for I don’t know how long. She slid my bloomers back up and whispered: “Don’t tell anyone.”’

It wasn’t until years later that Vanessa began to comprehend what had happened to her that night.

‘For years I kept Susan’s visit to myself. I didn’t really understand until college. I was with my boyfriend and it hit me and I blurted out: “Oh my god – I was molested.”’

Her behavior started to change for the worse.  She begin to rebel. She smoked weed, stayed out late and even got pregnant.  She had an abortion when she was still in High School.

Despite her rebellious phase, Williams continued to enter beahty pageants and was crowned the first black Miss America.  She said she wasn’t really happy or excited about the honor,

‘I had no emotion. I wasn’t happy. I wasn’t excited. I wasn’t there. I just smiled and waved.’

She also said that she was criticized by not being black enough, and her mother actually received death threats.  To make matters worse, she was stripped of the title when nude pictures taken two years prior surfaced.

Vanessa has no regrets. She realizes that all she has gone through has made her who she is.   Williams has four children , Melanie, 24, Jillian,22, Devin, 19 and Sasha 11.  When they ask her about her past she feels confident in telling them the truth,

“When my kids have asked about Miss America, those photos, or any other part of my life, I told them what I always tell them — the truth,” she writes. “After all, it was part of my journey that led me to them and to where I am today.”

“You have No Idea: A famous Daughter, Her No-nonsense Mother, and How they Survived Pageants, Hollywood, Love, Loss (and Each Other)”  hits the stores on April 17, 2012.
