Wow! The Green Lantern is Gay.  Gay or Black, Is it the Same?

As I wrote a last week, we knew that DC was going to make one of its most popular characters gay.  Who knew it would be The GREEN LANTERN!!

As part of “Earth 2” Green lantern will be launched as a Gay character.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, writer James Robinson explains….

“The original version of Alan Scott was an older man, and he had a superpowered son, Obsidian, who was gay, The fact that Scott was young now [thanks to a universe-wide reboot] meant Obsidian no longer existed. I thought it was a shame that DC was losing such a positive gay character. I said, “Why not make Alan Scott gay?”

Just to clarify,  The original Green Lanterns son was Gay, DC reboots him and makes him young.  So young that he doesn’t have a son anymore which eliminated a Gay characters.  So they decide to make the Green Lantern himself Gay!

One million moms has already spoken out on the topic expressing their view,

“Children desire to be just like superheroes. Children mimic superhero actions and even dress up in costumes to resemble these characters as much as possible. Can you imagine little boys saying, “I want a boyfriend or husband like X-Men?” This is ridiculous! Why do adult gay men need comic superheroes as role models? They don’t but do want to indoctrinate impressionable young minds by placing these gay characters on pedestals in a positive light.”

I have mixed emotions about this, but as a black male it helps to relate this too my life and racial struggles.  In order to put them on the same playing field you must assume that you are born Gay as one is born black or not black.  With that simplification then things become close to equal. Without that then the debate can go far and wide.

(FYI: It’s not totally equal to being black because you can’t see Gay in a job interview or bank loan so it could never be totally equal)

So at first I’m upset because I think there is a certain loss of heroics in a super hero being Gay.  Immediately my mind drifts to stereotypes of Gay people portrayed on TV comedies, by comedians and homophobes.  Also, I am prejudging them by the fact that they are doing something or someone that I find, for lack of a better term distasteful. Like thinking someone is class-less or less intelligent because they like to eat pigsfeet or do something that I don’t like.  Something legal that doesn’t harm anyone, that I don’t like.  All of these are very bad habits, practices are my problem and I own it.  My way to fix it is through education and positive experience.  It’s my predispositions that are not allowing the Green Lantern to be Gay and still be heroic.  As time goes on, and Gay people are prevalent in society enough to see and experience them in all walks of life excelling in all situations the predispositions will get washed away.

The one thing that I still can’t understand with Gay people is…

If you are a man, that doesn’t like women, but yet your boyfriend looks and acts like a girl, then why not just date a masculine woman.  Or vice versa.  If you are a Lesbian, and your girlfriend looks and acts like a man;  Mens clothes, mens haircut, man everything, then just date a man.
