Amongst the Sex Scandal, Kevin Clash formally Resigns from Being the Voice of Elmo

Another one bites the dust!  Kevin Clash has resigned.  Amidst 8 days of scandal regarding allegations of underage sex with a 16 year old male, Kevin Clash steps down. He will no longer be providing the voice for Elmo.

SESAME FOUND HIM INNOCENT

Clash has been Elmo for 28 years.  That is longer than most people who read this blog have been alive.  When the news was initially released, Clash’s employer, Sesame Workshop said that they performed their own investigation and found that Clash was innocent.  They said that his only wrong doing was using the company email to send off sexually explicit communications to his “crush”.

AN ADULT CONSENSUAL RELATIONSHIP…..

The underage male was the identified as Sheldon Stephens, and aspiring model, alleged criminal and college student.  Sheldon recanted his statement stating that he and Clash were actually in an adult consensual relationship that didn’t occur until Stephens reached the ripe old age of 18.

STEPHENS RECANTS THE RECANT!

Just when you thought it was all over, Clash was innocent and Elmo would be restored to purity and fuzziness…..Stephens decides to recant, his recant!  [more…]TMZ reported that Stephens signed a contract that would pay him $125,000 to recant the allegations.  The now 24 year old was in tears as he signed in front of Clash’s attorneys.  He now wants to give the $125,000 back and stick to his original claim.

This all proved too much for Clash.  He originally just took a leave of absence but reports today say that Kevin Clash has officially resigned.  Sesame Workshop has released an official statement:

Sesame Workshop’s mission is to harness the educational power of media to help all children the world over reach their highest potential. Kevin Clash has helped us achieve that mission for 28 years, and none of us, especially Kevin, want anything to divert our attention from our focus on serving

as a leading educational organization.  Unfortunately, the controversy surrounding Kevin’s personal life has become a distraction that none of us want, and he has concluded that he can no longer be effective in his job and has resigned from Sesame Street. This is a sad day for Sesame Street.
