Jon Bon Jovi breaks Silence one Week After His Daughter Stephanie’s Overdose.

It’s been nearly a week since Jon Bon Jovi’s daughter Stephanie was found unconscious in a dorm room at Hamilton College.  The 19 year old overdosed on heroin and nearly died.  Since the incident, Stephanie and her family thought it would be a good idea for her to take a break from college at least until the new year.

Jon Bon Jovi released his first comments regarding the incident during an interview with Fox 11.  Bon Jovi was promoting the new Al Pacino movie “Stand up Guys”, for which he wrote two songs on the soundtrack.  When asked about the incident, Bon Jovi was poised, calm and appeared to be taking everything in stride.  He said regarding the overdose,

What I do for a living seems glitzy and glamorous but if you don’t take it too seriously it’s a great way to make a living. And then life goes on. Things happen.’

When Bon Jovi learned of his daughter’s condition he cancelled all appearances.

Originally his daughter was charged with possession when officers found[more…] heroin, marijuana and other drug paraphernalia but under New York’s “Good Samaritan law”, you can’t charge someone involved in an overdosing incident in which medical assistance is called to prevent death.  The District Attorney on the case, Scott D. McNamara said that even if he wanted to prosecute them, he couldn’t.  He said,

‘To proceed would be highly inappropriate and highly unethical, and would jeopardize my opportunity to practice in the future.”

SIDE BAR:

Why is there a Good Samaritan law?  Overdosing is the leading cause of accidental death in New York and the reason that people die is that people take several hours to call the police and in up to half of the cases no one calls for help at all.  The reason is because of the drugs around, people are afraid to call the police and be arrested so they would rather watch their friends die then get arrested themselves.  Therefore now in New York if someone overdoses and the paramedic are called, they cannot be prosecuted.

Bon Jovi and his wife had no idea that their daughter was using drugs but are prepared to deal with the challenges that lie ahead.  Despite this near death experience taking place at Hamilton College, Bon Jovi still plans to perform a fundraiser on behalf of the mall private school.
