Rutgers University Offering College Course On Beyonce
You know when your mom would walk in your room (without knocking) and yell, “Stop wasting your time with all this celebrity garbage! Do your homework!” Well, little did she know that we were just preparing for the future.
Rutgers University is offering a class about Beyonce. The college course is called, “Politicizing Beyonce” and according to the teacher, Kevin Allred, the course will use Beyonce’s music and career to “explore American race, gender and sexual politics.”
The teacher sat down for an interview with Rutgers Today and talked about his course,
[more…]“This isn’t a course about Beyoncé’s political engagement or how many times she performed during President Obama’s inauguration weekend.”
Allred explains that he’ll use Beyonce’s lyrics and compare them to readings from the Black Feminist movement, including the writings of Sojourner Truth and Alice Walker.
So, why did he choose Beyonce?
“She certainly pushes boundaries. While other artists are simply releasing music, she’s creating a grand narrative around her life, her career, and her persona.”
While this might sound like a silly idea, it’s not the first course to focus on a celebrity. In fact, there is a course called, “The Sociology of Hip-Hop: The Theodicy of Jay-Z” at Georgetown University, which was obviously created before he removed the hyphen from his name.
