The family of slain rapper Goonew is facing some intense criticism after displaying his dead body inside Washington, DC’s Bliss nightclub, during a celebration of his life.
The truly bizarre memorial service went down on Sunday, weeks after the emerging hip-hop star was shot dead at just 24-years-old.
Goonew’s mother and sister, Patrice and Ariana, made it clear to the funeral home that they didn’t want nobody looking down on Goonew. They didn’t want people viewing his body in a casket at some church he never attended. They wanted to keep things real by celebrating at the club.
So they decided to have his body propped up on stage at the club. He was dressed in his regular, club-going clothes, and the outfit was complete with a crown on his head.
The crown on his head was the funeral home’s idea … because he was known as the ‘King of Maryland.’ His family says he was the life of the party and loved to have fun, so they knew he wouldn’t have wanted a somber funeral.
Following the service, he was taken by a horse-drawn carriage through his neighborhood, before being buried at a nearby cemetery.
And while his family loved the ceremony, some folks at the club complained. They had no idea the dude’s dead body would be staring down at them. To make matters worse, there was a $40 cover charge to enter the club. So basically, people paid $40 to see a dead body.
The club released a statement on the matter, claiming they didn’t know Goonew’s body would be in attendance…
Bliss was contacted by a local funeral home to rent out our venue for Goonew’s home-going celebration. Bliss was never made aware of what would transpire. We sincerely apologize to all those who may be upset or offended. Please keep Goonew’s family and friends in your prayers at this difficult time.
Who knows if that apology will be enough for the people who work at the club. One person on Twitter, claiming to be a bartender at Bliss, expressed shock and disappointment…
Imagine walking into work and it’s a deceased body on display. They didn’t warn us they didn’t tell us they didn’t even know. When i say I’ve officially been traumatized this year i mean it.
I don’t even know what to say. We’re truly living in the craziest of times. Safe to say, you can find Goonew in da club, bottle full of bub…
