Olivia Munn Reveals She’s Been Battling Breast Cancer For 10 Months, Underwent Double Mastectomy

According to the latest numbers, about 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer in their lifetime. It’s one of the most common forms of cancer, and thankfully, it’s one of the most treatable, but only if you catch it early. This is why annual screenings are so important.

Just ask Olivia Munn.

The 43-year-old actress, who just welcomed her first kid with John Mulaney back in late 2021, announced on Instagram this week that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in April of 2023.

The ‘Office Christmas Party’ star, 43, explained that she and her sister tested negative for the BRCA gene — the most well-known gene to cause cancer — and her mammogram came back clear, but her doctor decided to calculate her Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Score just in case.

Munn says the doctor potentially saved her life by doing this. She discovered her risk was around 37%, which is pretty dang high. Her doctor scheduled her for an MRI, then an ultrasound, and finally a biopsy, which revealed she had Luminal B cancer in both breasts, which is an aggressive, fast moving cancer.

30 days later, she had a double mastectomy and has had four more surgeries since.

I went from feeling completely fine one day, to waking up in a hospital bed after a 10-hour surgery the next. I’m lucky. We caught it with enough time that I had options. I’m so thankful to John for the nights he spent researching what every operation and medication meant and what side effects and recovery I could expect. For being there before I went into each surgery and being there when I woke up, always placing framed photos of our little boy Malcolm so it would be the first thing I saw when I opened my eyes.

She also thanked all the doctors and nurses who helped her along the way. She also called her OBGYN her “guardian angel.”

This story is a prime example of why health insurance matters. If this happened to a single mom just trying to get by, they would have given her the all clear after the mammogram.
