Sophia Bush Reveals Her Friend Helped Her Realize She Was Actually Attracted To Women
Sophia Bush has identified as “straight” for the majority of her life. She’s dated a lot of famous men, including Chad Michael Murray and James Lafferty.
Most recently, she was married to Grant Hughes, but their marriage only lasted one year. They got married in 2022 and were divorced by 2023.
Shortly after her divorce, Bush remembers having an “aha moment” while talking to one of her friends.
One of of my best friends looked at me and was like, ‘I gotta say, that was just painful to watch, and I’m so glad you’re getting out of it.’ Also, I don’t actually think you like men.
Bush talked about this moment in detail on her ‘Work in Progress’ podcast this week. She talked about how when she was in her teens, she had fallen in love with a “beautiful French exchange student,” but that was the last time she was with a woman. She felt like she couldn’t identify as “bisexual” because she primarily dated dudes.
But after the conversation with her friend, she started to think about her sexuality differently…
The queer community has been my home and is the home of my whole family since I was old enough to understand. Uncle Tony had a boyfriend and not a girlfriend. I would never want to hurt the people I care the most about who’ve been in this fight for liberation for so long. [I told myself I was] gonna get out of the way. And then, it was like, ‘Well, maybe I don’t have to get out of the way. Maybe I just get to like who I like.’
And she’s doing just that. Bush is currently dating professional soccer player Ashlyn Harris. They’ve been dating since October, so it’s getting pretty serious now.
Oh, and if you’re wondering, she identifies as “queer” now.
I can’t say it without smiling, actually. And that feels pretty great. Sexuality exists on a spectrum.
