Kevin Ware’s Frightening Injury (VIDEO)
On Sunday, March 31st the Louisville Cardinals won a basketball game, a very important basketball game. It was a win that put them in a place where every college basketball team wants to be, the Final Four. Louisville out played the Duke Blue Devils for just about the entire game and ended up with a dominating 85-63 win to advance to the Final Four. They are the only number one seed still in the tournament; you’d think the team from Kentucky would be on top of the world right now. However, something horrible happened with 6 minutes and 33 seconds left in the first half of the game.
Louisville Sophomore Kevin Ware suffered one of the most horrific injuries you will ever see during a basketball game. The reserve guard leaped in the air in an attempt to contest an open shot by a Duke player, but when Kevin Ware landed from his brief flight in the air, his lower right leg snapped in half. The bone had broken through the skin and all this happened right in front of Louisville’s bench. When the players saw his leg, they were shocked and disgusted. Some fell to the ground, others turned around and a few just started sobbing on the court. You could hear a pin drop in Lucas Oil stadium in Indianapolis; everyone was shocked, including the announcers. “I don’t know if in basketball I’ve ever seen one like that.” Jim Nantz said.
Louisville coach Rick Pitino was completely devastated by the event. Rick said to reporters after the game yesterday,
“It was very difficult to look at and watch. But he’s a brave young man, because all he kept saying was, ‘Win the game.’ I think 9/11 and the loss of a child were probably the two most difficult things in my life. This was very traumatic for us to overcome, because we all witnessed it right up close.”
The injury even shocked the man who suffered from an almost identical injury on the football field 28 years ago. That man would of course being former NFL Quarterback, Joe Theismann. His leg snapped in half after being sacked on Monday Night Football, the injury ended his career. However, Joe offers a bit of optimism for Kevin Ware. Theismann told USA Today,
“He’s really young. So you just pray that he comes back from it. You look at what A.D.’s done up in Minnesota and what Robert Griffin III is doing, medical science has come a long way in 30 years. The exact severity of this injury, you don’t know. That will all be determined in the next couple of days here and he’ll be able to go forward. I hope it’s not severe enough where it will prevent him from coming back and playing.”
