Zayn Malik Drops One Direction Shocker, Claims He “Never Really Wanted To Be” In The Band!
BONUS: Zayn Just Released his Video for Pillow Talk featuring Gigi Hadid
We already knew Zayn Malik wasn’t happy with the lack of creativity and artistic freedom found inside One Direction toward the end of his time with the band. But we didn’t know he had no desire to be in the band from almost day one.
During his first on-camera interview since leaving One Direction, Malik was brutally honest when he was asked why he wanted to leave the band. He admitted it was something he thought about from the first year. He could tell right away that the music was going in a direction he couldn’t support.
I never really wanted to be there, like in the band. I just gave it a go because it was there at the time, and when I realized the direction we were going in—mind the pun—with the music, I instantly realized it wasn’t for me, because I realized I couldn’t put any input in.
You see, what he wanted to do as a singer was completely different than what the band was doing. It was like a vegetarian chef trying to cook for Ron Swanson. The incredible fanbase One Direction created expected a certain sound from the band, and it’s a sound Malik couldn’t find the passion for.
In the early days it was crazy. There was like five of us sat in a room, trying to write a song. Now, how do you write a song from five people’s perspectives? You don’t know where you wanna take the music, what you wanna say. There’s none of that, so you kinda just go with whatever’s going on. And I just didn’t wanna be the person to say I was right, because who am I?
The 23-year-old singer was then asked if any of the members of One Direction could tell he was not happy. He claims the boys definitely knew the music wasn’t his “cup of tea,” but he also admits they tried to include little bits of his vision to make him happy, “They were trying to facilitate certain things for me so that I could sing certain R&B ad libs here and there, and that was nice.”
But it just wasn’t enough. We’re sure the majority of One Direction fans will continue to slam him, but the more he talks about his decision, the more I respect him for it. It takes a lot of courage to walk away from something so incredibly successful.
