Tom Cruise Tapped to Star in Remake of Classic Western The Magnificent Seven
Variety reports that a possible remake of The Magnificent Seven could possibly be in the works and Tom Cruise would have a starring role. This is all preliminary at this point as there is no director or writer on board the project. Right now it’s just Tom Cruise and a decent idea.
I can almost bet my paltry pay check that most of you don’t remember the 1960’s original featuring seven heavyweight actors during their heyday. The only reason I remember is my dad was a Western maniac! The seven super studs were:
- Charles Bronson
- James Coburn
- Robert Vaughn
- Brad Dexter
- Horst Buchholz
- Steve McQueen
- Yul Brynner
Seven bad ass cowboys hired to protect a village from being ravaged from bandits. It’s not clear who’s character Cruise would be playing and who his co-stars would be.
CRUISING BACK TO THE TOP
Cruise is in full recovery mode after the Oprah fiasco of May 2005. Who knew that one interview could have such a drastic effect on a man’s career. Before the epic couch jump Cruise could not be stopped.
Just think: The Firm, Jerry Maguire, MI II, Minority Report, The Last Samurai, Collateral….
then you have, “HI Oprah – Jump, Jump, Jump”
….and then Lions for Lambs, Valkyrie, Knight and Day….
After an out of character role in Tropic Thunder and then simply killing it in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Cruise will cement his comeback in the upcoming Rock of Ages. The clips alone from his performance in the film are already generating rave reviews. Next up will be the Jack Reacher adaptation “One Shot” and he’s currently filming the $100 million dollar post-apocalyptic sci-fi epic “Oblivion”. As you can see the big paychecks are rolling in!
WHO NEEDS ORIGINALITY? NOT MGM!
The Magnificent Seven will be one of several upcoming MGM remakes which include Robocop, Carrie, Poltergeist, WarGames, Death Wish….and the list goes on. The good thing about The Magnificent Seven is that it has the possibility of being a Western that could actually perform on the big screen (as well as Johnny Depp’s Lone ranger) depending on the casting of the other 6. With a few sequels to also film including Top Gun 2 & Van Helsing it’s unclear when the project would actually start filming assuming they can get a decent script together. Like I said…it’s still early.
