Catherine Zeta-Jones Talks About Her Struggles With Bipolar Disorder

It’s been a rough few years for Catherine Zeta-Jones and her husband, Michael Douglas. As most of you know, Douglas was diagnosed with throat cancer back in 2011 and even though he is feeling better now, Catherine and Michael are still trying to get back on track.

The 43-year-old talented actress sat down for a very emotional interview with The Telegraph. She talked about how Michael’s cancer diagnosis triggered her recent struggles with her bipolar disorder,

“(Bipolar) is something I have been dealing with for a long time. When you get sideswiped like that (with Douglas’s illness)  it’s an obvious trigger for your balance to be a little off — not sleeping, worry, stress. It’s a classic trigger.

I never wanted to be as open about it as I was. I have a British stiff-upper-lip mentality  — it wasn’t something I wanted to shout from the rooftops. But when it did come to light, I know I’m not the only person who suffers with it or has to do deal with it on a day-to-day basis.”

The very personal and emotional interview continued when the actress talked about how she felt when she learned about her husband’s cancer diagnosis for the first time,

“When Michael was diagnosed with cancer I really thought, ‘You are going to have to wipe me off the floor.’ This happens to me all the time, but it’s still a huge shock when the cards start to fall and you realize, ‘My God, it is really happening to us.’ The human spirit is amazing… Although I wasn’t as strong as I thought I could have been…I wasn’t.”

She really opened in this interview. It’s not often you hear a celebrity talk so openly to the media about problems like this. If you’d like to read the rest of the interview, click here.
