Some celebrities make a sex tape to get back in the news, some start a fight with a more popular celebrity, but only one changes their last name.

After discovering he had been out of the headlines for too long, Mr. Hasselhoff has randomly popped out to tell everyone he has changed his last name. The “Hassel” has been dropped from his last name, according to the YouTube video you see below.

In the video, the 63-year-old actor announced, “I’ve been wanting to drop the hassel from my life for years. Now it’s official.”

So what exactly is going on here? Did he really change his last name? We’re not exactly sure. The certificate certainly looks official, I mean he even put it in a frame!

But according to his rep, Hasselhoff (or just the Hoff?) is just having some fun…

It’s an excerpt from an ad campaign that launches in Australia this weekend. David is just having some fun and more will be revealed in the next 24 hours.

He’s already changed his name on Twitter, but I suppose that’s just part of the bit. If this truly is some ad campaign, it probably didn’t go “viral” the way he had hoped. Yeah it got our attention (and several other sites) but his original tweet announcing the name change only got 114 likes.

The poor Hoff is just not that popular anymore. If he wants another ride on the Fame Train, he’s going to have to do something bigger than this.
