Some Folks (Including Ted Cruz) Are Outraged After Sam Smith’s “satanic” Performance At The Grammys
Uh-oh. Sam Smith has pissed off The Bible Belt again. The 30-year-old non-binary artist performed ‘Unholy‘ last night at the 2023 Grammys alongside collaborator, Kim Petras.
The duo took the stage in devilish attire with flames, cages, horns, and sultry devil dancers. While the Grammys crowd seemed to enjoy the performance, some people at home took issue with it.
One of those people? Ted Cruz, of course. He tweeted out, “This…is…evil.”

Damn, really? He hasn’t reacted this strongly to something in his 20+ years in politics, and this dude has seen school shootings, wars, pandemics, Trump calling his wife ugly, and the list goes on and on. None of that has ever sparked a “this is evil” from him, but a silly artistic performance at the Grammys? THAT’S THE THING THAT’S EVIL?
Grammy’s host Trevor Noah knew there would be backlash after the performance, so he did a quick bit where he pretended to be on the phone with his mother, calming her fears, “No, mom, it wasn’t the actual devil… Yeah, you did warn me about Hollywood.”
In the press room after the performance, Petras talked about how she was rejected from certain religions…
I personally grew up wondering about religion and wanting to be a part of it, but then slowly realizing it doesn’t want me to be a part of it. So it’s a take on not being able to choose religion and not being able to live the way that people might want you to live, because, you know, as a trans person, I’m kind of already not wanted in religion.
Makes sense.
By the way, why was Ted Cruz even watching the Grammys? That doesn’t seem like his vibe at all. I’m pretty sure there was a new 700 Club last night, right?
