Eddie Murphy is out, Billy Crystal will Host The Academy Awards for The Ninth Time

When if in a jam, why not go with your old standby.  You can’t go wrong; except there is a generation that doesn’t even know who Billy Crystal is.  After accepting the position for the ninth time the comedian joked:

“Am doing the Oscars so the young woman in the pharmacy will stop asking my name when I pick up prescriptions. Looking forward to the show.”

No kidding.

Eddie Murphy bailed after Ratner who was all set to produce the show, jumped ship after his use of the “F” word.  Ratner who was Eddie’s boss during the filming of “Tower Heist” also tapped him to host the Academy Awards telecast.  I guess people didn’t realize it was a package deal.  No Rat, No Murph.  I’m relieved because I was expecting Murphy to bomb.

Billy Crystal’s first time hosting “The Awards” was back in 1990.  That was almost 21 years ago, so my average reader was only 3.  “Driving Miss Daisy” was movie of the year and the show was so big on TV that it was challenging the Super Bowl in ratings.  It easy got over 40 million viewers.

Crystal hosted when Titanic won with an audience of 57 million people.  A really big deal. He will have his work cut out for him with just a little over 3 months to prepare. 

I also didn’t realize the Billy Crystal and Wayne Newton have the same plastic surgeon…..and hair dresser.
